Special Exhibit: Encapsulated Folk Handicrafts

Storehouses with mortar walls and draining roof tiles are loved as a characteristic architectural feature of Kochi. The thick soil walls and sturdy door protected rice crops and household goods from moisture, rats, fire and robbery.

However, due to changes in lifestyle and the changing of generations in recent years, the role of the storehouse is nearing its end. We often receive phone calls asking whether we would like the folk handicrafts from the storehouse they are demolishing or clearing out. The number of materials collected from these storehouses have increased.

Storehouses, however, are something like time capsules in which daily items used in various ages are kept exactly as they were in use. Looking at folk handicrafts from storehouses tells much about the homes as well as the culture and history of the area.

In this exhibit, there will be displays of materials found in storehouses such as sawachi (large platters) and monosue (various containers) that are necessary utensils for okyaku (Kochi-style parties) among other things selected from our museum collection. There will also be bits of information on storehouses.
